The James Cowan that I am trying to place is the only heir that is not known as either a child or son-in-law. The others are already placed on the tree. James is living on the 1880 census for St. Clair county, Alabama. He had been in St. Clair since marrying there in 1844. I found him in St, Clair for these dates: 1844, 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. In 1900, his widow has moved to Arkansas and is living next door to their son, Louis/Lewis Cowan in St. Francis county, Arkansaas. Apparently he died between 1880 and 1900, but I have found no evidence of exactly when it happened. I assume he died in St. Clair (since he lived there for so long), but again- no proof. I don't think there are any death records avaialble for that time frame for St. Clair, AL. I have searched every avenue that I can find. Thanks for the suggestion.
