Thanks for the reply. I wonder, though. I have a descendant i'm doing research on. I first find him on an 1850 census, and both he and his wife's place of birth are listed as unknown. In 1860, 70, and 80 he lists his place of birth as Tennessee and his wife's place of birth as Alabama. In 1900, however, he lists his place of birth as MISSISSPPI. After his death, however, his children continue to list their father's place of birth as Tennessee. As of right now i'm chalking this up to a neighbor or something giving the info, but still...it makes me wonder. This particular man is full of mystery as it is. Oral family history tells me that he came to Texas from Tennessee on the run from a wife. At first I thought that if he was "on the lam" that's why he put "unknown" on his census. But once I studied the census for his county closer I realized that several other families were listed as unknown. So, you're probably right...nothing too exciting going on.
