Thanks for your reply. I definitely think that the parish records (if I can locate them) are the way to go.

Unfortunately, my grandmother, Kate Navin, was born in Walsall (Staffordshire) in December 1911 which would have been after the UK 1911 census. I have paid for a search to be done of the 1911 census for the address that my grandmother was born at. Hopefully the information on that will shed some light on her mother's circumstances at the time. Apparently they can't search by names but if you give them an exact address they can search that for you which is good.
