Rachel,

I found a family in the 1880 census, William 34, Elsie 30, Olive 10, Charles 7, John 4, and Blake 2. This could only be your family if the information in your post about William and his wife dying in Arkansas in the early 1870s and the birth order of children Olive and Charles is wrong. How did you come to know they died in Arkansas? What enlistment records showed you William's age and birthplace? None of the Civil War records on Ancestry.com provide that information. How did you know he enlisted in Warren County Iowa, if NARA has no record of him?
