Tippings from South Derry
Hello all!
My grandfather was Thomas Tipping, born in the Magherafelt/Castledawson area. His father owned a building
business in Magherafelt & Thomas later entered the family
business. Following disagreements with his father about the
management of the business he emigrated to South Africa in
about 1902 & returned to Ulster in about 1910. I believe he
had two sisters, one of whom was Elizabeth. Family lore
suggests that a sister or cousin Jemima emigrated to the
USA & settled in Pasadena, California.
He returned from S. Africa in about 1902, married Katherine
Starr, returned to S. Africa & fathered 4 children:
Bessie, born approx 1903 in S. Africa, who
married Capt. Billy Burns from Larne & mothered three
children, Bill, Robin & Moya.
George, born between 1903 & 1909 in S. Africa, who died in a yachting accident in 1936.
Joan, born 1911 in Castledawson, who finally married a Mr. Dorrington in about 1976 & moved to Kent.
James, (my Father) born April 1913 in Castledawson.
The family moved to Belfast in about 1923. in 1943 James married Martha Harper & fathered two sons:
David Anthony Tipping was born in Belfast 05th Dec 1946, & is now resident in Morpeth, Northumberland.
Peter Lawrence Tipping was born in Belfast 12th March 1949 & is now resident in Wimborne, Dorsetshire.
Looking for connections in the South Derry area.
