Article from the Carolina Spartan, dated Oct. 27, 1875.
MURDER - A murder was committed at Porterville Academy, about half a mile from McBean station, in Richmond Co., Ga., at 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. A temperance address was delivered at Porterville academy, and among the auditors were MORRIS M. TINLEY, his father and brother. After the conclusion of the address, the father and brother rode homewards, expecting MORRIS TINLEY to follow. The latter was preparing to leave, when a young man named Alpheus Tilly, from Burke County rode up. It seems that Tilly had been circulating some stories about TINLEY and that the latter had heard of it. When Tilly came up to TINLEY asked him why he had been telling lies on him. Words followed between them. Tilly finally pulled out a pistol and shot TINLEY twice, one of the balls striking him in the side and killing him instantly. Tilly immediately rode off. MR. JOHN TINLEY, father of the deceased, offers a reward of $100 for Tilly's arrest.

{ this is not my family, but wondered if Tilly was caught ? }
