Henry Tinkle Henry Tinkle, our earliest known ancestor, was the third of three brothers. He was born in Virginia, July 5, 1790. His parents were of German descent. Nothing else is known about them. They migrated to this country around 1785 with Henry's two older brothers Charles and Nicholas. His brother, Charles, was sold as an indentured servant,at the age of nine, presumably for his passage, to a man in New Jersey. There is nothing to indicate how Nicholas fared in this new land during his younger years. Some stories say that the parents both died enroute to America, but Henry was born here. This leaves speculation that maybe Henry was born at sea, and that his birth date may be the date of his arrival in this country. Henry married Martha Young from Virginia about the year 1819 in a little town of Rising Sun, IN. west of Cincinnati, Ohio. Records indicate they settled (as much as the early pioneers did in those times) in Preble County, Ohio. Henry owned land there and so did his brother Charles as well as other Tinkles believed to be sons of Charles. Seven of the eleven children of Henry and Martha were born during the time they were in OH. These were Elias, Sarah, Anna, Isaac, Charles (my ancestor), Delilah, and Mahala. Sometime around 1833, Henry and Martha disposed of their property, loaded their wagon, hitched up their horses, and left Ohio and migrated northwest to Carroll Co. IN. They settled in an area southeast of the county seat of Delphi,IN.,in Democrat Township, near the small town of Cutler. After their arrival in Carroll Co, IN., Henry and Martha had four more children, Lydia, Martha, Henry Jr., and Nancy. Martha passed away in 1852 and after her death, Henry married Catherine Lowery. One more child, Mary Ann, shows up at this time. It is not known if this is a step-daughter of Henry's or a daughter of his and Catherine's. Mary Ann died in 1874 still being in her teen years. The final resting place of many of the Carroll Co. Tinkles, (Henry and his descendants), is a small cemetery named Ball Hill, which is resting on a hill surrounded by typical midwestern farmlands. Henry's home was just a short distance ( within 1/2 mi.) to the south of this cemetery. Henry passed away on the 4th of April, 1870. He was eighty years old. (General info about Henry TINKLE I hope this formats ok. More to come possibly by e-amil)
