My grandmother Nancy was Native American, but she was a Slave, born in Virginia (Charlotte County) in 1828.

Some of my relatives were searching for her in the Dawes, so I was helping them until nothing came of it, so I thought that she might be a slave because we could not even find her in the census records.

The family thought she was a free woman, but I found out differently. Some people don't realize that Native Americans were put in Slavery before the Africans came to America, especially in the Virginias. Native Americans and Africans were Slaves at the same time for a while, then it became only the Africans.
