Hi, Buz.Are you certain that John Timberlake provided the security?According to my handwritten notes (copied from page 93 of Kathleen Booth Williams, Marriages of Louisa County, Virginia, 1766-1815), Joel Timberlake provided the security for the marriage bond of John Smith and Elizabeth Timberlake on March 27, 1791.Did I copy this down wrong? It is important to know whether it was John or Joel.If it was Joel, then I would assume that Elizabeth Timberlake was somehow related to Joel Timberlake.Of course, Joel would not have been old enough to have been the father of the Elizabeth Timberlake who married John Smith, but I would still guess that Joel and Elizabeth were relatives. One possibility is that Elizabeth was Joel's sister. In any event, Joel was the son of Phillip Timberlake, Jr., and Phillip was the son of Phillip Timberlake, Sr., who died in Louisa County in 1789.You will find quite a lot of information about these people elsewhere in the Timberlake GenForum.I discuss the families of Phillip, Sr., and Phillip, Jr., at considerable length in my book, Willcott, Kay, Timberlake, and Allied Families.I have a few things to say about Joel, although he is a somewhat mysterious figure.I estimate that Joel was born ca. 1768;he was the son of Phillip Timberlake, Sr., and Jean (Peers) Timberlake.Unfortunately, I don't know the name of Joel's wife. The marriage of a Joel Timberlake and a Sarah Thompson on March 17, 1814, in Louisa County is well documented, but we don't know if this is the same Joel Timberlake who was born ca. 1768.If it was the same person, it might have been his second marriage.Alternatively, the one who was married in 1814 might have been a Joel, Jr., if, indeed, there was a Joel, Jr.To complicate matters, there is a record of a marriage bond of a Joel Timberlake and a Martha Perkins October 29, 1816, in Louisa County. On November 14, 1831, the inventory and appraisement of the estate of Joel Timberlake were recorded in Louisa, and Martha A. Timberlake was the administrator.I am sorry that I am unable to give you a positive identification for Elizabeth Timberlake. She might have been a daughter of Phillip, Jr., and Jean (Peers) Timberlake.I already know about some other children of Phillip, Jr., such asJoel, Sarah, Catherine, Mary, John, Nancy (or Ann), James, and Jean.Maybe Elizabeth should be added to the list. But I can't say this for sure.I will think about this some more. Best wishes, Larry
