Warning! Fake Timberlake Pedigree!
As is well documented, William Timberlake married Mourning Johnson in 1798 in Bedford County, Va.The claim is circulating that William's parents were a William Timberlake and a Marjorie Metcalf;it is found both in the Ancestral File and in the Ancestry World Tree.Unfortunately, it is false. The claim is based on a fake pedigree, whichfirst appeared in print (completely undocumented) in Dr. Newell Gates' manuscript, "Genealogy of William and Mourning Timberlake."(I have the second edition, 1968.)Actually, the man who married Mourning Johnson was William King Timberlake, whose parents were Charles and Mary (Criddle) Timberlake of Campbell County, Va.To establish this, compare William Timberlake's signature on his 1798 marriage bond with that of William King Timberlake on the October 22, 1794, will of Mildred Criddle in Campbell Co.The signatures match!Mildred was William's maternal grandmother. His paternal grandfather was Phillip Timberlake, Sr, of Louisa County, Va.I have more information on the fake pedigree, if anyone is interested.
