Roy Tilson-Knoxville, TN shoots Bernard Sliger

This is from a newspaper article in the Knoxville Sunday Journal, 24 August 1930 which describes the accidental shooting of my grannies brother, Bernard Sliger, by Roy Tilson.

Roy Tilson had been having quarrels with Earl Norman, who supposedly slammed a screen door in Tilson's face, cussed him, and came at him with a knife. Tilson reacted by shooting at Norman, but missed and pierced Bernard Sliger's heart. Sliger was coming out of a restaurant, and Norman was apparently close by and ran when the shooting started. Sliger only casually knew these men and had nothing to do with the conflict. Tilson shot him at close range, leaving powder burns on his body. Tilson turned himself in immediatley, saying he did not mean to shoot Sliger. Sliger died shortly thereafter at Knoxville General Hospital.

Norman claimed he did not have a knife and stated that he was holding a piece of tobacco in his hand, which he had bought in the restaurant. He also said he accidentally hit Tilson with the door. Tilson and Norman had been quarreling sometime before the incident, Tilson having had a warrant put out for Norman for assault.

My granny said Tilson went crazy due to his grief over what he had done.
