ERRATTA - SOURCES - & CORRECTIONS ON TILLINGHAST; #3

Before I get too far into this text, let me say here: Most New researchers into the birth place of PARDON [ELISHA] TILLINGHAST, The EMMIGRANT, should read this and remember it. [Also read my other messages on this board.]
PARDON [ELISHA]TILLINGHAST, WAS BORN IN STREAT, [ OR STREET,
choose your own spelling of it], Sussex Co; England. Now Streat is both a "Hundred" and a small Parish in this "Hundred" or District. The Tillinghast Farm is in this District of Streat. The following is ver batim as per Sir Anthony Dickins text on East Sussex, the Tillinghast Farm and "Hundred" of 'Strete' as it was spelled in those days.

" HUNDRED OF STRETE IS SHOWN AS IT WAS APPROXIMATELY AROUND 1300 -1350. TODAY IT IS MUCH SMALLER AND NEARER TO WHAT IT WAS IN THE 'DOOMS-DAY BOOK'. [SEE MY EXPLANAATION OF THESE "HUNDREDS" IN MESSAGE #196-THE ANCIENT HISTORICAL LAND OF PARDON TILLINGHAST.]
THE SEVEN SISTERS [CLIFFS] ARE PROMINENT WHITE CHALK CLIFFS JUST EAST OF CUCKMERE HAVEN, 3 OR 4 MILES SOUTH OF ALFRISTON. AS A SMALL BOY OR IN HIS TEENS HE[PARDON] WOULD CERTAINLY HAVE KNOWN THESE WHEN HIS FATHER,[PARDON(JOHN) MOVED TO ALFRISTON; AND HENCE THE ENTRY IN THE DICTIONARY OF NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY THAT THE EMIGRANT PARDON TILLINGHAST HAD BEEN BORN AT 'SEVEN CLIFFS' NEAR BEACHY HEAD.
**IN FACT, HE WAS BORN IN STREAT".***

SO UNLESS THERE IS PROOF TO THE CONTRARY, LET'S REFER TO 'STREAT' AS PARDON'S BIRTH-PLACE. THE TILLINGHAST FARM IS IN THE HUNDRED OF STREAT.

Most of the other Tillinghasts were born in Streat excepting Pardon's younger siblings;

SARAH- b.Nov 15,1627 in Cowfield //
and the twins,
BENJAMIN AND ANNE- B. Jan 10,1630, in Ifield.

Pardon [John} Tillinghast, our Pardon's father, didn't move to Alfriston untill 1642, the year before the emigrant left for the Colonies. Alfriston is a shipping port so the 'lure' of travel surely intoxicated him for the 'New World'.

From this point on I will glean genealogical items from the Book; "The FOUNDER of the TILLINGHAST FAMILY in the U.S."
BY JOHN GIFFORD TILLINGHAST; 1889
[Pertaing to the Monument and improvements to Pardon's Gravesite.]

All for now. ELTON
