Anyone know if this T-related statute were repealed???
I am interested in a possible media opportunity during the Reunion in Providence, July 18-20.It is centered around the traffic statute that was enacted in 1681, viz., "That a horse might not be put to a gallop between the houses of John Whipple and Pardon Tillinghast."
I have asked the Mayor's office to see if the City Attorney can find out whether this has been repealed or not.If it has not, then perhaps one of us can rent a horse and ride it between those two points and be arrested (pre-planned) to call attention to the silliness of keeping this on the books. And also perhaps call attention to the general public that the Reunion is taking place.
Bruce Tillinghast, the local owner of the restaurant where we will be brunching on Sunday, wondered if it would be possible to identify that route today, given the change in land use.If we can, then we can put some balloons at either end and stage an event!Perhaps even the Mayor can be the horse-rider!We know that would get the media's attention, if anything would...
Anyway, I was curious if anyone in this august group knows any more about the ordinance, citation, etc., and whether it ever were repealed.
Thanks.
