Some may be curious about the name "Niles" in the genealogy of Joshua Tilden. Joshua's wife was Phebe Wales. Phebe was the daughter of Rev. Atherton & Mary (Niles)Wales. Mary 4 Niles (Rev Samuel 3, Capt. Nathaniel 2, John 1)was born 27 Mar 1713 at Braintree, MA; d aft. 1762. Mary & Atherton were married 5 Nov 1730. Atherton graduated Harvard (1726). Mary's father, Rev. Samuel Niles, was the first person from Rhode Island to graduate Harvard (1699) and was a well known pastor at Braintree, MA. John 1 Niles came over about 1634 to Dorchester, MA, and was an early settler by 1639 of Braintree.
