I'm sorry I didn't see this before! I am intrigued by your message because it sounds similar to my own particular problem. My 3xgreatgrandfather William Tilbury, ship's carpenter, died some time before 1837. His son William Henry Tilbury, born 1812-13, was always said to be an orphan (implying both his parents had died), and was apparently brought up by an uncle (not known whether father or mother's side) in East Anglia. According to the 1861 census he was born in Enfield - but I have never found a baptism for him.
