Bertha Tiger - Creek Indian
I am trying to help a friend trace her family. Her mother was born in Oklahoma and was an Indian.Information is very sketchy on her.My friend remembers her mother telling her that her name was Florence Elizabeth before she was adopted by white people. She believes the people who adopted her were Mr. & Mrs. Corfell. They had a son named Calvin.Florence Elizabeth's name was changed to Amanda Christina Corfell, when she was adopted by the Corfells. She was born in 1922 in Muskogee, OK.
When Mr. Corfell passed away, Mrs. Corfell placed this young girl into a Catholic orphanange. She was not adopted out of the orphange.
Searching with such little information is not easy.My method of searching is basically by the process of elimination.I have been searching census records for children, who were Indians, by the name of Florence and Elizabeth.I'm searching by her middle name just in case they called her by her Elizabeth.
I have found a family in the 1930 census, which is a possibility. There is a Bertha Tiger, age 28, a widow, in the household of Virgil and Burl Pugh.Bertha is listed as a lodger and a housekeeper.Children in the home are Elizabeth (8), Thomas (7), Eloise (5) and Elsie (2).
The census shows that Bertha and all of the children were born in Oklahoma. There is a number 86 above each place where Oklahoma is listed. The fathers for Bertha and the father for the children are listed as Full Blood, with the number 44-5 above those entries. The mother of Bertha and the children are all listed as Creek.Does anyone know what these numbers in the 1930 census are supposed to mean?
My thinking on this family is that something may have happened to Bertha, the mother of the children.Their father was deceased, and they all may have been placed up for adoption.I have not been able to find anything on these children, so this possibility seems plausable. If their names were changed, it may very well be the family I am seeking.
My next question is - Does anyone know of Bertha Tiger, widow, with children named Elizabeth, Thomas, Eloise and Elsie?
Any help with other methods of finding records would be greatly appreciated also.
Thank you very much to anyone, who can help me and my friend to find her family.
