In Reply to: GENE TIERNEY - ACTRESS by Diane Hafen of 1258

My wife's family, the McCarthy's also were told (her father's generation) that they were related to Gene Tierney and indeed my father in law's great grandmother was Catherine Tierney who came to Hastings village Ontario in 1852 following her many brothers: John, Michael, Jeremiah, Terrance and Matthew. Each of these men had 6-10 children and many of the older boys moved to NY state. I did check up a bio on Gene Tierney in hopes it would reveal something about her ancestry. Her father (or grandfather) was Howard Tierney of Brooklyn I think. The grandfather I recall was a financeer in Upper State NY but this bio I found did not mention any furthur info on the Tierney side. I recall it mentioning she was descended from a 'Daughter of the Revolution' and this was probably on her mothers side. I have not been able to establish the connection between Howard's father or grandfather being one of the sons of Catherine Tierney's brothers, or one of the brothers himself. The family story could have been just one where the name of a famous actress being the name of the grandmother was discussed with my father in law's generation as being just that. If Gene Tierney is descended from the Tierney line that came to Ontario in the 1845-1852 era then her Tierney's were from Limerick. Her father I think was born 1870-1890 era and his father certainly would be a possibility as one of the many sons who were born in Ireland and Hastings in the 1830-1860 era. If you think some of your Tierney ancestors came to Canada first let me know. I'll try and find my notes on the book I read. If you wish to write me at my email it is
