From "Tichenor Families in America" (c) 1988 Harold A. Tichenor
WALTER TICHENOR was probably born in Essex Co., NJ. He died when on his way back to NJ after a visit to his son, Isaac, in Dryden, NY. According to descendants, his residence was Elizabethtown, NJ at the time of his death. His marriage to Hannah Denman Mar 20, 1782 is recorded in Westfieid,NJ, church records. Information handed down in the family, states that the mother of Walter's two sons, Isaac and Caleb, was Hannah Howell, who had two sons by a previous marriage. Another account handed down in the family is that "Walter had two wives. The first was a widow by the name of
Denman, who had two sons, Moses and Jacob. His second wife, Hannah Howell, bore him two sons, Isaac and Caleb." Isaac according to a grandson, was born Jan 13, 1783, less than a year after Walter married Hannah Denman. It would appear that she is the mother of Isaac. Could i t be that she was
Hannah Howell, widow of a Denman, by whom she had two sons, at the time of their marriage to Walter?
Whatever the case, all accounts agree that Walter Tichenor had only two sons, Isaac and Caleb. Essex Co., NJ, deeds in 1803, 1806 and 1809 give Walter's residence as Springfield, Township. The land in three deeds was jointly owned with Isaac, who in one of the deeds is referred to as the son of
Walter. Some of the land was described as being in Cheapside. Walter's son, "Caleb Tichenor, Jr.," owned property adjacent to Walter. The "Jr." in his name suggests the possibility that Caleb was Walter father's name.
Walter Tichenor served as a Private, Essex Co., NJ, Militia, and received certificate 471 amounting to 2 pounds :I :2 for the depreciation of his continental pay during the Revolutionary War.
Information from descendants of Isaac's son, Wllliam, also is that Walter was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and that he was a "descendant of Martin Tichenor, the first Tichenor to come to this country." Hannah will be hereafter called Hannah Howell, keeping in mind that proof of her
maiden name is not available.
This information is printed in the book as a separate entry, with Walter having first generation designation, which indicates that Harold was unable to establish a direct link to Martin Tichenor.
Hope this helps a bit. If you have further information, or corrected information please let me know. I would appreciate hearing from you.
