Tibbets Family Genealogy Forum

I recently bought an antique brass telescope, built by a British firm between 1840 and 1870. It's inscribed "R. A. Tibbets, Gloucester, Mass."; no doubt the buyer's name. It'd be nice to have some history on it. But I can't find any record of an R. A. Tibbets in Gloucester on this forum, and don't know where else to look. Does anyone have any information?
It's possible R. A. Tibbets was in the Civil War and brought the telescope with him. He may have died in the war, which might explain his not leaving records. Or perhaps he was in the shipping or fishing business. (Gloucester was a major port then.) Just speculation on my part, though. I'm not very experienced with modern geneology, though I did help my dad with his in the 1970's. (E.g. we checked microfiches of all immigrant ship passenger lists from Germany in the 1880s, and found records for both sides of his family.)
