Hi Colin, I checked the Thurston Genealogies to see if there might be further reference as to other children of David and Esther (Metcalf) Darling and whom they may have married, nothing.
I also checked to see if you had posted queries on the Darling Family forum, and I see that you have. It seems you know you way around researching your lines.I always hesitate to offer any suggestions until I know how much experinece one might have in doing genealogical research. That said, I still offer this: In one of your postings on the Darling site, you mention that two of David Darling, Jr. and Martha's children died in Wisconsin and their records of death show their mother's maiden name as "Darling."I have one word of caution here.Did you check the other records on those pages?I've found in some records that, even though the maiden name is requested, the surname shown is always the married name of the woman.I've wondered the same thing as you: Could, say, a Darling have married a Darling?Oftentimes, cousins did marry, so there was that possibility that David and Martha were each "Darlings."But, it is also possible that the person doing the recording just showed the woman's married name - meaning a revisit of those records might determine if all the recorded women's "maiden" names were actually the same as their "married" names.
If that turns out to be the case, then, that would, of course, lead you to seek out her true maiden name, which might lead you back to NH or NY to search marriage or parish records there.
Have you tried the historical/genealogical societies there?
Hope you find your answer.
Charlotte
