Thanks so much for all that information - I had heard from another source that the name could have been German.
A fellow researcher knows of a lady researching THURLINGs in Yorkshire (she is now based in Keighley) - it appears her husband's line is related to mine, having moved there from Norfolk sometime in the 1800's.
Are you interested in any info I can dig out on this family of 'emigrants'?
