This is a strange situation with Albert Elijah Thurber. I wonder if the census taker was mistaken in 1880. Have you seen the original census? I don't know why he was named John H. Thurber then. I do find Albert E. Thurber twice enumerated in 1900 as follows:
1900 Soundex, Vallejo, Solano, CA, v. 44, E.D. 150, Sheet 5, Line 99 Albert E. Thurber, w(idower)? b. Sep 1822, age 72, b. RI; Clynton Thurber, son, b. Apr 1865, age 35, b. CA; Ethelda Thurber, dau. b. Nov 1870, age 29, b. CA.
1900 Soundex, New River Twp., Trinity Co., CA, v. 47; E.D. 19- , sheet 2, line 62 as follows: Thurber, Albert (w)idower? b. Sep 1828? or 1822 age 71, b. RI, enumerated with Franks, Gus, b. Dec 1876, age 23 b. SD.
The Soundex is only an index to the actual census. I haven't seen the actual 1900 census. The mystery is why does Albert Elijah Thurber have two residences in 1900.
I have Albert Elijah buried in Sunrise Cem., Sacramento, CA. In the 1920 Soundex I have the following from this family: Michigan St., Solano, CA E.D. 207, V. 126, Sheet 15, Line 29 Ethelda Thurber, age 46 b. CA, Jennie A. Thurber, sister, age 52, b. CA, Maybelle, age 17, b. CA (relationship unknown) and Clayton (pr. Clinton) age 58, b. CA. Clinton in 1920 is also shown on Napa Rd., Solano Co., v. 126, E.D. 207, Sheet 18, Line 40 enumerated with Carl Hasse as a roomer.
