My grandfather Thorp, upon his marriage to Minnie Beals, changed his name to Thorp --- reason was the Minnie thought the Thorpe sounded more elegant (more English) than Thorp, which to her sounded more norweigan (sp?). All subsequent offspring spelled the name Thorpe.
