Another book which points to the Cromwell link is from the Nebraska State Historical Society. The Poppletons were not only a military family, but a political family. Samuel Poppleton's grandson was one Andrew Jackson Poppleton, son of William. He can be traced thru Michigan to Nebraska. This is a very telling & interesting lead. Note at the begining of the bio the Cromwell link to Poppletons. I believe the Poppleton/Whaley union is no coincidence. http://books.google.com/books?id=0JsUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA94&lpg=PA94&dq='andrew+jackson+poppleton'+samuel&source=bl&ots=TIpJ5_Lv8a&sig=b9x8OM9RTaymIxEvvDpZc0imMFA&hl=en&ei=ETBtTLPtG4H_ngeYr-zcCA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CBoQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q='andrew%20jackson%20poppleton'%20samuel&f=falsehttp://books.google.com/books?id=0JsUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA94&lpg=PA94&dq='andrew+jackson+poppleton'+samuel&source=bl&ots=TIpJ5_Lv8a&sig=b9x8OM9RTaymIxEvvDpZc0imMFA&hl=en&ei=ETBtTLPtG4H_ngeYr-zcCA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CBoQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q='andrew%20jackson%20poppleton'%20samuel&f=false I have read many accounts of an Edward Whaley from Maryland. I do not believe this is the Regicide for the simple fact he would of been 103yrs old, not to mention the fact his family was in New England. One account had Edward in rough shape & possible blind by 80. I read he soon passed. This book is a very strong lead to build upon and shows the political aspects of the Poppleton bloodline. This is quite possibly the most interesting family I have researched. Another note you correctly pointed out is the spelling. Many variations including Wale/Whale & Middleton. The King had a mighty ranson on Edward's head. Many took persuit of the family in hope of riches. The family remained in hiding for 20yrs & had to change their surname often. Sympathizers took care of them & kept them safe. A hunch I have, and this is only a hunch, is after the family was able to walk freely among the population they wanted the Whaley name known. This could explain Whaley in John Whaley Thornton, keeping the name & family identity alive. Many people tried to impersonate a relation to the Regicide & Cromwell. Another word of note to the strength of the Poppleton bloodline continues with his great grandson Alonzo W. Thornton (John Whaley Thornton's grandson). Alonzo was in the Civil War in the Iowa 27th. During the Battle of Pleasant Hill he was shot in the neck & jaw and left for dead on the battlefield. He was taken POW at Camp Ford in Texas. How he was able to survive is a miricle. These were tough, hardy people. Please keep in touch as I will you so we may compare further notes of interest.
All the best,
Tammy
