I too have been looking for this man's name, and I also surmise that he must be Mattie's father. If he is, then his name is, in fact, James A. Thornton, not J.J. Thornton. I have even contacted UDC headquarters in Richmond to learn the identity of this JJT. If James A. Thornton is buried in this grave, his wife is buried in Albany, GA, beside her daughter, Susan Thornton Carroll. Her name is Priscilla Wilmot Thornton. James A. Thornton appears in the 1900 federal census, age about 71, living in Pelham, GA, with his wife, who appears in the Dougherty County 1910 list with Susan Carroll. If you learn anything more, please let me know.
