Thomson? You may be Clan MacTavish
Clan MacTavish (Gaelic is MacTamhais, meaning "Son of Thomas") is a "distinct and independent" Clan. After researching your own heritage, you may find that you are a Thomson/Thompson descent of this proud and noble Clan, having roots in antiquity.MacTavish, Thom(p)son - "Son of Thomas".We are NOT a "sept" of any Clan.
In the confusion today of understanding Clans and Septs, it is no wonder that people in North American and other hemispheres are confused by what they see posted on the Internet and with different, unauthorized people claiming to have the "correct information".But, no matter what we desire to do with the future, the "truth of history past" cannot be changed, it cannot be undone.
The best place to find out whether Clan MacTavish is a Clan or a Sept is at the Office of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh, Scotland. Not much different than checking on public records at a courthouse in the States to verify the validity of the furnished information.

I quote from a recent letter from Lord Lyon:
24 May 2000
"Clan MacTavish is not a sept of Clan Campbell. It is a distinct Clan"."Dugald MacTavish is is Chief of Clan MacTavish".
"It is a pity that all these people spend time looking at the wrong records when they
are in the Lyon Office. The time would be more profitably be spent in Consulting the
statutory Public Register of All Arms and bearings in SCOTLAND DECLARED BY STATUTE TO BE "THE TRUE AND UNREPEALABLE RULE OF ALL ARMS AND BEARINGS IN SCOTLAND", WHERIN (VOLUME 82, FOLIO 36) EDWARD STEWART DUGALD MacTAVISH OF DUNARDRY is described as Chief of the Clan MacTavish."
Signed Lyon
Sir Malcolm Innes of Edingight
Lord Lyon King of Arms
Edinburgh, Scotland
