Thomson Family Genealogy Forum
I am trying to verify the following information. This is all word of mouth except where noted. Any help or advice on how to find documented proof of Ireland components would be appreciated.
I am researching the descendants of Alexander Thomson of Antrim County Ireland and trying to verify a family story. There were father and son and grandson Alexanders in Antrim in the 1600's. Supposedly the first Alexander was awarded a land grant by the English for his participation in the Tyrone Rebellion as a Captain. (Where does one find such a document?) Some say he was just a soldier and was given the right to lease land in Antrim. (I found several Thomson's listed in the barony of Dunluce area of Antrim county in 1630 but I don't know if these are my Thomson's) It is said that Alexander Jr had at least 4 sons; John, Alexander, Robert and James. (I found in the LDS files hand written notes (1980's) from Lisburn Cathedral in Derraghy, Antrim, Ireland showing an Alexander Thom"p"son and listing his children's birth, but are these the same Thomson's. How does one see the Lisburn Cathedral register to check spelling without going to Lisburn?) All but John migrated to the US via New York. (I can find no immigration papers for these men in the US) John stayed in Antrim and married Esther Hale and had at least 2 sons; James and John. Both Esther and John died in the early 1700's when James was around 10 years of age. James was indentured to Patrick Hagan. (Are there indenture records some where in Antrim county today?) I don't know what happen to John in these years. James escaped Patrick Hagan at about 13 years of age and went to Scotland where he was hired to work on the farm of John Alexander. We think John Alexander was from Lanarkshire or Ayershire. James immigrated to the US with the Alexander's and married their daughter Ruth Alexander. They lived in Londonderry Township in Pennsylvania province. According to succession papers, James dies sometime between Feb-Jun 1749.
Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
