My direct ancestor is Rev. John Thomson (born ca 1690 in Ireland, died ca 1753 in North Carolina) through his second wife Mary McKean Reid. In my research on John Thomson I found a will (see item two below) in Sussex Co., DE that I believe may reference the first wife of John Thomson and may establish her first name as "Elizabeth." I have not yet seen the original, just an abstract. Some researchers suggest his first wife's name as "Unknown Osborne;" others suggest "Margaret Osborne." I realize the danger of making assumptions without first seeing the original documents. Below are several related items in chronological order from Sussex County, Delaware. All of the events occurred while Rev. John Thomson was living in Sussex County, DE. This also could prove that Rev. Thomson had a brother named Andrew. Can anyone confirm, refute, or add to this information? Item 1: "Andrew Thomson of Sussex; dated 8 Apr 1718; proved 16 Jun 1718; wife and children unnamed; brother John Thompson executor. Witnesses: John Allen, Esther Thompson, Joseph Shankland. Tr. ff. 446 447." (CD213 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Disk 1, Vol. XII, Abs. of Wills and Administrations of Sussex Co., DE, page 192) (Arch. vol. Will Book A101; Reg. of Wills, Liber A, page 148, folios 446-447). [Shirley’s note: John Thomson had a sister named Esther Thomson.] Item 2: "Robert Perrie of Lewestown; dated 10 Jul 1724; proved 20 Apr, 1725; to Elizabeth Thomson, wife of Mr. John Thomson, my horse named Button; to cousin Archibald Smith of Lewestown, merchant, my plantation in Somerset County, Maryland, upon the seaboard side, called Bengrove, surveyed for 200 acres; also my house and lot in Lewestown on Mulburry Street, next to James Sangster. Archibald Smith, Executor. Witnesses: John Price, James Miers, Philip Russell. A. orig., ff. 201.202." (CD213 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Disk 1, Vol. XII, Abs. of Wills and Administrations of Sussex Co., DE, page 277) (Arch. vol. A99, page 115) Item 3: "Archibald Smith of Lewes, merchant; dated 27 Nov 1729; proved 4 Dec 1729, sister Mary, wife of Theophilus Simonton; cousin: Anne Simonton; sister Mary's six children; cousin James Smith "land taken by me in Maryland for the iron work;" cousin Janet sister of said James; cousins James and Adam of the Glebe in the parish of Orney and Barony of Straban in the Barony of Straban in the Kingdom of Ireland, eight hundred twenty acres of land in this country; to Jane daughter of the Rev. John Thomson; cousins Anne Magdalena and Mary daughters of my brother Robert Smith in Ireland; sister Rachel Curry in Ireland; to my wife Isabella Smith; cousin Janet Smith, daughter of Robert, of this County; land left to me by my uncle Robert Perrie in Somerset County to be sold; Executor: cousin James Smith. Witnesses: John Shankland, William Molleston, Philip Russel. A orig. ff. 265-7; Tr. ff. 240 243." (CD213 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Disk 1, Vol. XIII, Abs. of Wills and Administrations of Sussex Co., DE, page 82) (Arch. vol. A99, Reg. of Wills, Liber A, Page 115, folios 240-243) [Shirley’s note: The birth date of Jane Thomson has been suggested as ca 1726, so this would make her about three years old when this will was made. The original will must be consulted to ascertain her inheritance.] Item 4: William Shankland of Sussex, gentleman; dated 14 Sep 1730; proved 17 Feb 1730; to grandson William son of my son Robert when 21; grand children Elizabeth and Robert also children of Robert; son William plantation in Angola Neck; son Robert; son John land whereon I now dwell; his daughters Sarah and Esther and his son John; son Joseph; my grandchildren by my daughter Elizabeth Thomson, deceased, Andrew, Margaret, Elizabeth, and to each of "my five grand daughters of my said daughter Elizabeth Thomson and further by reason of my son in law's removal with my said grandchildren into the province of Philadelphia I have given unto my said son in law etc.; son Joseph. Executors: Sons Robert, William and John. Witnesses: Thomas Gear, Mary Gear, Joshua Fisher. A. orig., ff. 278-280; Tr. ff. 250 253. (CD213 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Disk 1, Vol. XIII, Abs. of Wills and Administrations of Sussex Co., DE, page 83) [Shirley's note: The abstract does not show the closing quotation mark that began with "my five..... This Elizabeth Thomson could be the widow of the Andrew Thomson was died in 1718, but then who is the son-in-law? This abstract is so confusing that the original must be consulted.] Sincerely, Shirley Joiner Notify Administrator about this message?
