Various Thomson kin, Semple, Carlisle

Hi

I've got some apparently intermarried Thomsons in my background.

I know for sure that my gg-grandfather John Thomson was born around 1846 in Scotland, moved to Cleveland, Ohio before 1870. Was a pipefitter and eventually the owner of a pipe-fitting business. Married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Semple, she was born in Canada to Scottish parents, possibly named Cecelia Leggett and James Semple. After Lizzie died in the late 1890s, John Thomson married a woman from Iowa named Laura, born around 1860.

John and Elizabeth Thomson had three children, William, born around 1870; May Elizabeth (Mrs. Harry Williams) my great-grandmother 1871-1969; and Lillian or Lillie, born in 1882. Lillie married a Thomson relative named John Stewart Thomson. (His father was named either John or James Thomson, born Scotland around 1830, married Ellen, settled in New Jersey.)

John and Laura Thomson had a son Laurence or Lawrence. Their household by 1900 included John's sister Jean Thomson, born Scotland around 1862, and a nephew named Arthur Thomson, born Scotland around 1873.

In the 1880 Census John Thomson and Elizabeth Semple Thomson lived next door to John Carlisle (also a pipe-fitter) and Lillie Semple Carlisle- Elizabeth Semple Thomson's sister. Cecilia Semple- mother of Elizabeth and Lillie- lived in that household too. John and Lillie Carlisle's daughter Elizabeth married Arthur Thomson, her cousin's cousin.

If any of these people sound familiar, please let me know.

Mary Alpern
