Nickolas was born on the Island of Holm in Denmark near the Schley in 1814. Now, of course, the island belongs to Germany in the Schleswig-Holstein area. He spent the early years of his life as a captain of a ship and sailed around Cape Hope and up and down the California Coast. In 1852 he became a US citizen and moved to Milwaukee, WI with his wife Anna Dorothea Berger from Brandonburg, Germany and had 8 children.
His father was Italian and his mother German.
