Joseph & Margaret Thompson Pickway Co OH
1850 PICKAWAY CO OH CENSUS - 1850; Census Place: Deer Creek, Pickaway, Ohio; Roll: M432_720; Page: 145B; Image: 293.
191-192 TOMPSON, Josph 48 VA, Margaret 34 VA, Alexander I/J 13 OH, John F. 11 OH, William W. 10 OH, James O. 8 OH, Cinthey A. 4 OH, THOMPSON, Martha J. 2 OH
I am seeking information concerning the above Joseph Thompson and family. I have been unable to find records of Joseph in the 1840 census in OH that match this family, other than in Harrison County, but that Joseph is found in Harrison Co in 1850 and thereafter, not Pickaway Co OH.
I have been unable to find any of the children of Joseph and Margaret, other than my great-great grandmother Cinthia Thompson who married William C. Haines, Sangamon Co IL in 1862.
It is possible that John F. is the same that died in Christian Co IL in 1921, but I haven't been able to make a definitive connection. I have not yet ordered the death cerificate of John F., and am reluctant to do so with Christian County and Illinois's policies.
Does anyone have access to tax records that might indicate a year of departure of this familiy from Pickaway Co OH? Or does anyone know of a natural disaster or epidemic between 1850-1860 that would have taken the lives of most of this family?
Cintha married at age 16, but there is no permission record attached to the marriage license. Cintha died in Allen County KY 1905. Her husband William had migrated to IL with some of his siblings to his relatives location abt 1859 after the death of his first wife Alazar Richey. William married Lucy Young shortly afterwards in Christian Co IL. She died in childbirth in 1860 and he married Cintha in 1862, after which they returned to KY where Cintha bore 11 children, raised 10 of her own children, one having died in childbirth: and 1 step daughter, the other 2 step children having died in infancy.
Clues to Cintha's ancestry is from a family bible stating she was from OH. In the 1880 and 1900 census she states was born in OH (or other family members) alternately give her place of birth in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census as KY (residence), KS (?), IL (place of marriage), OH (place of birth), VA (parents). These are very diverse from Cynthia's own information, so she must have shared stories that involved these states.
The Kansas reference remains a puzzle. I have found no Thompsons with the names of her sibings that resided in Kansas. The closest possible Thompsons are:
Alexander Thompson (2 born in OH with parents b VA) found in Iowa after 1850
William Thompson found in NE (b. OH, both parents VA)
Joseph and Margaret Thompson (with other variant spellings) are not found as a household except in 1850. I am assuming they both died after 1850. Margaret was 14 years her husband's junior so she could have remarried. If she did, she didn't take her children, or they took her new name. It is possible Joseph had a previous family due to the spousal age difference.
I have been unable to find marriage records for Cintha's siblings in IL or Pickaway Co OH.
Cintha Thompson is not found in the 1860 census.
Another clue is that she was educated: she could read and write. I have been narrowing her sibling chase to those Thompsons that could read and write.
If anyone has a clue or information pertaining to the family of Joseph Thompson, it would be most appreciated.
I am descended from Cynthia's daughter Maude. Maude's daughter Lois was my grandmother.
