Ann Clayton Thompson b 1801 TN lived Marion County, TN; DeKalb County AL
Looking for information on Ann Clayton Thompson, b. 1801 TN (according to census records). Am particularly interested in checking out possible New Jersey roots, as she indicated on the 1880 census that her father was born in New Jersey, and her mother in Maryland. I would also love to find evidence of her first marriage. According to family stories, she first married her cousin, Jonathan Pope Clayton, who died approx. 1821 when her son, Cyrus Putnam Clayton, was born. I have found nothing about this Jonathan Pope Clayton. She then married William Thompson in 1832 in Hall County, GA.
A note written by a grandson of Cyrus Putnam Clayton’s says this about Cyrus’ father and Ann Clayton Thompson: “Three Clayton brothers came from England and settled near Lookout Mountain near Chatanooga TN about 30 years before the Civil War. One of these brothers left his place to join the Northern army, and after the civil war, returned to his place on the Southern side to continue his home. One of these brothers names was Daniel Clayton. One of these three men was Cyrus Putnam Clayton’s father. Cyrus P. Clayton was the only son of Granny Thompson by first marriage”.
There is another family story, entirely different then the one above, that says Ann Clayton’s first husband was Cyrus Putnam Clayton I. I have found nothing about a Cyrus Putnam Clayton I. Both stories agree that Ann married William Thompson, and that he died a few years after they married.
1840 Census Record; Marion County TN: Ann Clayton is found beween ages of 30-39, with a son between ages of 15-19. This would match the age of her son, Cyrus b 1821. Also this would fit with other family stories that William died a few years after he and Ann married.
Several of the names found in Marion County TN show up repeatedly on different deeds and documents related to Ann and Cyrus: Rankin, Burnette, Goodson McDaniel (one of her Grandson’s was named Goodson McDaniel Clayton). Additionally, ‘Land owners in Marion County TN by 24 have a Daniel Clayton and a Jonathan Pope. I am not absolutely sure of a connection; the evidence is circumstantial only.
1850 Census: Dade County, GA: Ann b. TN age 49 with 15 year old Emeline Townsend, right next to Cyrus Clayton family.
1860 Census: DeKalb County, AL: Anna Thompson, b TN age 59, next to a Henry Thompson and family, and close to Lyons family (children of Cyrus and Lyons family intermarried).
1870: Cannot locate Ann
1880 Census: DeKalb County, AL: Ann b TN age 69, father born NJ, mother born Maryland. Close to Lyons family.
Ann died abt 1883.
If anyone is researching this line or has anything to share, I would love to exchange information.
Many thanks. Julie Clayton
