James Thompson obit in Evening Democrat Gazette, Tues. 16 Aug.1887
"Death of a Pioneer"
The first licensed Methodist exhorter that ever settled in Scott county died in his home in Moline yesterday. He was James Thompson, uncle of William Thompson, of this city. He was a native of Ohio - born in 1812. His parents emigrated to Illinois when he was a boy, settling in Greene county. In 1831 Mr. Thompson and Caroline Tousley were married in that county, he being 19 and his bride 17 years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson lived in Green county until 1834, when they moved into Scott county and settled on a claim just north of what is now East Davenport. The present city of Davenport was not platted until two years after. They lived on the Duck Creek farm until 1849 when they removed to Rock Island county, Ill. Seven years ago they came to Moline to live with their children.
Mr. Thompson united with the Methodist Episcopal church when a young man and through a long life he was faithful to his vows. At his home here one of the earliest Methodist class meetings of this region was held. One of the members of this class was Mrs. Nancy Hutt, whose funeral occurred on Sunday. He was licensed as an exhorter December 4, 1838, and August 5, 1843 he received license as a local preacher, his license being signed by Peter Cartwright. While in Scott county Brother Thomson's home was a regular place of holding services, and Peter Cartwright often shared his hospitality. He was a pioneer and did much for the church of his choice. When in his prime he is represented as having been an interesting and effective preacher. In revival services he was both willing and efficient. He was a good man and accomplished much good. He leaves a wife who has been to him a true helper, and five children."
After her husband's death, Caroline Thompson removed to Puyallup WA. In September 1890, the Review Dispatch ran an article regarding the Thompson's property in Moline.
Parts of the article..."The Widow of the Late Rev. James Thompson Sues for Her Right of Dower in Fifty-two Acres of Moline Property, Owned by Her Husband Forty-six Years Ago. Mrs. Caroline Thompson, widow of the late Rev. James Thompson, one of the pioneer ministers of this country,...demanded her dower...Her husband was the original patentee of the land from the government, and she makes the claim that he sold it in 1844 without her consent or signature, consequently she has never relinquished her right...Her husband lived here and in this vicinity until two years ago, when he died here in Moline. Mrs. Thompson remained in Moline till...when, with her relative Robert Lyman she removed to Puyallup, Washington, where she now resides. We believe that three children of the Rev. and Mrs. Thompson are still residents of Moline, two of whom are Spencer Thomson and Mrs. King, wife of the water works employe."
I have yet to follow up on this case.
Brother William Hubbard Thompson was born in 1814 Hamilton Co Ohio, m. Mary Eldridge 15 Mar.1833 Greene Co IL, d. 16 Nov. 1892 Scott Co IA.
Brother Stephen Thompson b.1817 Greene Co IN (or perhaps IL?), m. Maria Hutt 16 Feb. 1842 Scott Co IA, d. 11 Nov. 1865 Scott Co IA (His oldest son William is the nephew referred to in James Thompson obituary.)
I think the Thompson parents were from Virginia, and moved through KY, OH, IN, & into IL. Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you find the Thompson parents.
Thanks!
