Robert was an Orphan and was adopted byan "Orphan's Bond" and raised byWilliam Herbert, Jrin Ashe (Allegheny)County NC.Robertmarried the daughter of his adopted father , "Catherine"in 1810. His name wasfirst listed in Ashe County, NC records in bill of sale of "Wagon and two Horses" by oath of William Herbert and James Johnson.
Robert bought95 acres of land in Cherokee (Now Clay)County NC at land auction on 3 Sep 1838. The land was located along the east side of the Hiawassee river. Robert's son William moved to Cherokee (Now Clay) County NCin 1852.
The 1 August 1850 census for Ashe/AlleghenyCounty, NC lists:Robert Thompson ,67 farmer , $2,000.00 value of farm and born in New Jersey.;Catherine Thompson58 , born in VA;Salina Thompson, 18 female born in NC:Samuel Thompson, 23, laborer,born in NC;Jane Thompson, 17 born in NC andRobert King 18 ?
The 1860 Census shows Robert living with his son Samuel Herbert on a farm of 2500 acres valued$11,600.00 near the town of Spartain Alleghany County, NC. The Census lists Robert being born in New Jersey.It is believed that Robert is buried in the Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Whitehead, Allegheny County, NC. (Near Sparta, NC).The old home place is located about half mile east of the Cemetery.
Robert isListed as (AFN: RN16-4R) in the Church of Latter Day Saints files.
