Hi,
I am currently researching a line of Benjamin Thompsons in neighboring Bute/Granville Co.They may be related since there are some common names. There are a number of Benjamins in this famly in the 1700s and 1800s.I'll mention three in my line. One was born in ca. 1725 and died in 1771 in Bute Co.His son Benjamin was born ca. 1758 and died in 1796 in Georgia. He had a son Benjamin who lived and died in GA.A story related by a descendant in this line said that the elder Benjamin was born in Ireland and came to America with his family. My line grows from the middle Benjamin, whose son William ventured westward to the Mississippi Territory.
I just went through a compilation of NC tax lists by Clarence Ratcliff (Genealogical Publishing Co. Baltimore 1984).It has the following Thompsons in Orange Co. (years prior to the 1790 census).
1755 --Charles, Laurence, and Thomas
1779 --Benjamin, Henry, James, John, Joseph, and Theophilus
In neighboring Granville / Bute Counties are:
1755 -- Benjamin*, James*, Jennings*, John, John* (s. of Benjamin), Samuel, Sarah, William* (s. of Benjamin)
1771 -- Benjamin*, Drury*, Elizabeth* & s. Gideon* and Shem* (Isham), James*, John*, Joseph*, Robert, Samuel, Mrs. Sarah, George, and Zachariah*.
Those marked with an asterisk are the people who were mentioned in the will of Benjamin Thompson who died in Bute Co. in 1771. As you can see, there is a Robert and a Samuel in Bute Co. who are not children of the Benjamin who died in 1771.They appear, however, to be too old to be the children of your Benjamin.
That's about all I can add except that one of the earliest records of a Benjamin Thompson in this area is in a Deed Book in early Granville Co. Benjamin Thompson witnessed a deed on Oct. 2, 1749.
Credits: A lot of this came from Ruth Davidson (also a descendant of these Benjamin Thompsons) as well as Vicky Kruschwitz who published (online) an article with Donna Sarchet on a group of allied famiies in Wilkes Co. GA at the turn of the 19th century.
Keep me in mind with your research.I'm interested in how these Benjamins are related.I will, of course, keep you apprised of my findings as well.
Take care, Dale
