John, I am very interested in this information you have posted. However, I cannot confirm any connection - but the similarities are certainly all there. M. D. Thompson would have been born c1838. Have you not been able to find him on the 1850 census anywhere? One of the problems I see is that my husband's William Thompson apparantly had only three sons who lived to adulthood that I know about. Charles Thompson, b. c1800 SC, is my husband's line and I have an excellent tree on his family. I don't think M. D. Thompson comes from that line. Dempsey Thompson, son of William Thompson is the one we know the least about. He was born c1815. We know he had children because of the probate records for Ransom Thompson: Dempsey Thompson - named in the probate records of Ransom Thompson, 1891 Pickens Co., SC...."The heirs of Dempsey Thompson unknown". So far, this is all I've found on anything close to the name Dempsey Thompson, showed Dempsey Thomas as a FEMALE. I've never seen any other listing for the name Dempsey to be used for the female gender. 1880 Census Place: Brush Creek, Perry, Alabama Source: FHL Film 1254028 National Archives Film T9-0028 Page 357C Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Martin DOMINICK Self M M W 60 AL Occ: Farmer Fa: SC Mo: SC Martha DOMINICK Wife F M W 54 AL Occ: Keeps House Fa: SC Mo: SC David DOMINICK Son M S W 18 AL Occ: Farm Laborer Fa: AL Mo: AL Mary DOMINICK Dau F S W 12 AL Occ: Going To School Fa: AL Mo: AL Marely HALL GSon M S W 4 AL Fa: AL Mo: AL Dempsey THOMAS MotherL F W W 76 SC Fa: NC Mo: NC William THOMAS Other M S B 20 AL Occ: Farm Laborer Fa: SC Mo: SC You can see that the above census probably doesn't reflect the Dempsey THOMPSON we are seeking, but so often the census takers have made mistakes on name spelling, or the transcriber did. The last son of William Thompson, was Ransom Thompson, for whom we have to thank for listing all of his known heirs in probate records. He appears to have been single all of his life and left his property to his sibling & their children. I think Sarah, William's probable 2nd wife, would have been too old in 1838 to have had W. D. Thompson as her son. She was born c1785 (using census data). Lots of "missing-links". Another problem, I feel that there are cousins to William Thompson who also moved from Pickens Co., SC to GA when he did, but I am greatly lacking on data for them. Please post any knew information you find regarding W. D. Thompson. I will do the same. I like to use this forum because you never know when someone will see these posts and be able to help you.
