Pat Miley Attorney at Law Post Office Drawer 428 Walhalla, South Carolina 29691 Dear Mr, Miley: My highly esteemed Judicial Collegue, the Honorable Clement F. Haynsworth, Jr. has very kindly forwarded the information which you were good enough to obtain with reference to Col Robert Anderson Thompson. I am very much interested in Col., Thompson because it appears that he is of the same family of Thompsons from which I am descended on the mother's side. My grandmother Worrell was Nancy Elizabeth Thompson and they came to Choctaw County, Mississippi, from what is now Anderson (then Pendleton) District, South Carolina. I also might say that my Grandmother Coleman was a Bruce, Her father, Berry Bruce, was born on Wolf Creek north of Easley, in what is now Pickens County. As an interesting and rewarding hobby, I have made several trips to Anderson, Pickens, Clemson and Walhalla in search of further information on my ancestors. It was indeed good of you to assist me, as you have done, and should I be able to respond in similar fashion, I would consider it a pleasure. With best wishes I am Sincerely yours, James P. Keys Box 414 Walhalla, South Carolina 29691 Dear Mrs. Keys I now have before me the letter which you wrote to Honorable J. Pat Miley on October 17 concerning Colonel Robert Anderson Thompson. In this connection, for your information, I herewith enclose copies of the letters which I have today written to Judge Haynsnorth and Mr. Miley. My thanks go out to you for the information which you have furnished and which will be of vital assistance to me in the research which I have been doing for a number of years on my Bruce and Thompson ancestors who came from that area to Choctaw County, Mississippi, some of them by way of Alabama. I have been trying to find an opportunity to get to Walhalla, which I have visited on previous occasions, but it seems that our judicial burdens get worse instead of better. Therefore, I do not know just how soon I may be able to get there. You probably already have a copy of it, but I herewith enclose an excerpt from the Cyclopedia of Eminent and Representative Men of the Carolinas. This resume, no doubt compiled from information furnished by Col. Thompson himself, states that his grandfather, William Thompson, died in Alabama. My great-great-great grandfather William Thompson was born in Belfast, Ireland, came to Union County, South Carolina, and was killed by Indians in Alabama in 1816 or 1817. I note in your letter to Mr, Miley that you were married in 1916, so I divine from that that you have been blessed with what has now become a long life, in which you had the opportunity to see and observe much, Thanking you for your consideration, I am Respectfully yours, James P. You can have no idea how deeply I appreciate this, It is most valuable in my efforts to learn more of my great, great grandfather, William Thompson, who Lost his life to the Indians while Alabama was still a territory. Also, highly interesting within itself, is that I am well acquainted with the Thompson family mentioned in your letter, who lived on Twelve Mile. He was a neighbor to my great, great grandfather Bruce. Perhaps you know that some of these Thompsons moved to Habersham County, Georgia, where Grandfather Bruce moved to in 1820, My great grandfather Bruce had a son named Thompson, whose son was Sheriff of Choctaw County while I was District Attorney. Really, it is a small world. I hope you have a nice visit to Washington at Christmas, and that you will always be assured of my gratitude for your kindness. Respectfully yours, James P. Elizabeth was the daughter of Dudley Pruitt, Sr. and Ann. She was born in South Carolina in 1778. She married first, William Thompson. They had twelve children. William was killed by an Indian in the Bibb County, Alabama area around 1817. I believe their children were born in South Carolina, Georgia, and maybe Alabama. After William's death Elizabeth married J. Pierson. They had three more children. Sometime after William's death, Elizabeth and family moved to Pickens County, Alabama. And sometime after J. Pierson's death, Elizabeth and family moved to Choctaw County, Mississippi. I believe she was living with Elijah Thompson at the time of the 1840 census. I am looking for proof that he was her and William's child. I would also like to know their other children's names as well as the names of the children of her second husband. I know one of those children was named William J. Pierson. He too had moved to Choctaw County, Mississippi and lived down the road from Elijah. Any information on these lines would be appreciated. He WAS Governor of Mississippi from '56-60 and was quite well known. Seems he was something of an author too. In addition to the Coleman book referenced in the following paragraph I just pulled off the net, he wrote a book titled "The Bruces of Choctaw County Mississippi". The Judge mentioned the Bruces in his letter to Louie Key's wife, and James W. Featherstone Thompson's 2nd wife was Alice A. Bruce according to what Louie sent me back in '98. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Charles City, Virginia line of Robert Coleman was compiled by James P. Coleman, former Governor of Mississippi, now deceased. His book, "The Robert Coleman Family From Virginia to Texas, 1652-1965" is available on microfilm through the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. The Colemans in this line who migrated to other areas settled mainly in the Carolinas before spreading westward from Georgia to Texas. If you suspect your line might descend from the Charles City Colemans, please study the microfilmed book for clues. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm thinking and hoping that this all may lead us somewhere. I also got an email in reply to a postcard I sent over the weekend trying to locate Kent L. Townsend who wrote that message on Rootsweb in 1998 about William Thompson husband of Elizabeth Prewitt (sp. Pruett in the R.W. Simpson book) killed in Ala. in 1817. I sent him an email back detailing what I knew and suspected and hoping he may have something concrete to share with us. George Thompson gthompson@houston.rr.com (end of George’s notes) With new census data available, several cousins working on this line recently discovered that we do not believe that the William Thompson killed by Indians in 1817 AL was our William Thompson. The reasons are presented below. If Ransom Thompson was born 1818 in SC - this also adds some credence to my theory that our William probably died in AL, but not until after 1850. The William Thompson killed in 1817 could have been kin, maybe as a brother to James Thompson, our William's father, but we do not know. T The 1891 Pickens Co., SC probate records for Ransom Thompson (see his notes below), son of William Thompson, names Ransom’s heirs and these papers lead us to a new discovery. There is one William Thompson, b. c1774 SC, living with a Ransom Thompson on the 1850 census (Aug. 2nd) Gwinnett Co., GA, family #26/26, page 131, 36th Subdivision. A copy of this entry was posted to Karen Booth's MyFamily site. The listed Ransom Thompson was born c1818 (showed to be 32 years of age) and a lady named Sarah Thompson was listed under William Thompson's name (he was listed second, right under Ransom's name). Sarah was 65 years, b. NC. Karen and I believe this is the Ransom Thompson in our family, and our William and his wife Sarah. There is a William Thompson in 1840 Gwinnett Co., GA also, page 108, 406th Dist. He is 60/70 and there is one young female under 5 years living with him and a female who is 50/60. Their next door neighbor is Charles DEAN, which is very good circumstantial evidence that this IS the William Thompson in our line. See notes under Charley Dean, husband of Abbie Thompson, for more details. There is also a William Thompson in Gwinnett Co., GA on the 1830 census, pg. 338 who appears to be the same man on the 1840/50 census there: 1m5/10, 1m10/15, 1m50/60; 1f15/20, 1f40/50. Also notice where so many of these family members lived in the same areas of GA and AL. She is listed on the 1850 Gwinnett Co., GA census with William Thompson and Ransom Thompson. Finding any of William's known children on the 1880 census saying their mother was born in NC should help answer this question about her, if the census is correct about her being born in NC. So far, Abbi Dean is the only child of this family that I can find on the 1880 census, and on that census she gives her mother's place of birth as SC. This Joseph Thompson wrote his will on Feb. 25, 1810, recorded & proved in Anderson Co., SC in October 1810. Mary (Molly) died in AL at about 100 years of age (this from "Thompson Genealogical Journal, Vol. 1" sent by Dot Smith DOTG@aol.com. They came to America in 1776 and landed in New York City, whence they made their way over land to South Carolina, and settled in Union County. The were Whigs (patriot cause). His grandfather, William Thompson, was born in Union County, but moved to Pendleton District and settled on 12 Mile River about eight miles north of Pendleton Village, where his father, Charles Thompson was born and died. Charles married Mahala Gaines whose family was from Virginia. There is a mention of Col. Robert Thompson's younger brother, Rev. George McDuffie Thompson, who resides in Texas. In 1849, Robert edited and published The Pendleton Messenger for nearly three years, along with Hon. Frank Burt. In 1853, he purchased The Keowee Courier and was owner for 45 years. He said he has quite a bit of information on the Colonel and his father was Captain Charles Thompson (1799-1873) (military service unknown) and married Mahala Gaines (1878). The below letter was written to John Keys Knox on the SCPICKENS-L mailing list: "I am the greatgreat grandaughter of R. W. Simpson, and can tell you his research was meticulous. He did all the research to secure membership for his wife, Maria Louise Garlington, to join the Colonial Dames of Virginia. He also expanded upon and updated the Holmes document that dealt with the extensive Simpson line itself, and was published in the genealogy field, the book title, which has in the last decade or so been reprinted, was entitled History of the Old Pendleton District. This book is still available in original form at the Anderson County SC library. R W was the "Dick" whose letters appeared in the book Far Far From Home, was a very skilled attorney, and sat as the first president of the board of Clemson University. She was born April 29, 1848 in 12Mile Dist., Pickens, SC, and died May 28, 1915 in Ambia, Lamar, TX. Notes for GEORGE MCDUFFIE THOMPSON: George Mac Thompson was a Methodist preacher, a circuit rider, serving in Roxton, Brookston and Ambia communities of Lamar Co., TX, and a Chaplin in the Civil War, with the Confederacy. Paul Woodard, a descendant, wrote that George Mac served with "I" Company of the Fourth Infantry Regiment from South Carolina. He and Mahala moved to Texas early in 1880, settled in the Brookston area of Lamar Co., TX. He is buried in the Dickey Cemetery. His obituary begins "Died Near Brookston......A telephone message received from Brookston last night stated that Rev. G. M. Thompson, who lived about half way between that place and Ambia, died about 6 o'clock in the evening. It was not learned what arrangements have been made for the funeral. The deceased was taken sick about ten days ago and his death was not unexpected. He was a Methodist minister about seventy years of age and was an old resident of the county, and upright and highly respected citizen. He leaves three or four children surviving him. One of the sons, G. H. Thompson, lives in Paris, and another, who is a minister, lives in Roxton." There was no date or newspaper name with the old obit. 1880 Census-Hurricane, Pickens, South Carolina Source: FHL Film 1255238 National Archives Film T9-1238 Page 81B Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace George M.
