A small family history states that SAMUEL S. MILES THOMAS (b. c1760-70?) "lived on a farm in the vicinity of Newberry, S.C. during or shortly after the Revolutionary War period. We do not know the size of his family, but he had a son named Edward, to whom he left his property, under the terms of a will filed at the courthouse in Newberry. It is likely that Edward was his only child, or the only living child at the time of his death...." (The Thomas Family by Prentice W. Thomas, p. 1.) Gabriel Thomas "was a staunch Primitive Baptist," had 2 sons, Wm. & John. Adeline m. Jack Porter, had 1 son, Cornelius Porter. Archie Miles Thomas, "the third child...(p.5:) born in S.C....probably about...1810." lived in Tallapoosa Co., Ala., when he m. Rebecca Eliz. Parker near Dadeville. Lived on a farm near Horseshoe Bend "owned by a Mr. Germany." Later moved to Morrisville, Calhoun Co., Ala., d. there Feb 1899, approximate age 90. Bur. Pelham community in a cem. on Ft. McClellan property today. One son Sam (T?) Thomas was father of Huey Emanuel (father of Prentice W. Thomas, author) and George, who returned to Newberry, S.C. about 1890 to check on the family estate and died mysteriously. Page 3: "The estate of Samuel S. Miles Thomas.... It is thought that later this property came into the hands of Edward's son, George. The final disposition of the estate is unknown; however, an interesting incident relating to it occurred about 1890. By now many of the descendants of Samuel S. Miles Thomas were living in Alabama. Word filtered down to them that the Thomas property in S.C. had been abandoned by George Thomas, or his children (because land was plentiful and cheap in those days) and it probably still existed as an unclaimed estate...." But when Archie Miles Thomas' son George went to S.C. to check on it, he never returned, further fueling the imaginations in Alabama. David Thomas is listed on p. 3 as "the fourth child on the family list was David. He was the father of four children, named: John, William, Jim, and Mary." This was David A. Thomas b. 1831 in GEORGIA, who married Alcey McCain & lived in Talladega Co., Ala., where his children knew the Archie Miles Thomas family in neighboring Tallapoosa County. Since he was born so late, and in GA., did they confuse David with a nephew perhaps? These four children were John Anderson Thomas (b. April 27, 1857, m. Mary Emma Pitts, Talladega Co./Clay Co., Ala.), William Collin Thomas b. 1862, James Cornelius Madison Thomas b. Sept 19, 1866, and Mary Allie Thomas Bryant. Cornelius Thomas (p.3): "During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army, participated in a number of battles, and returned safely to his family at the close of the war. He was the father of four daughters." GEORGE THOMAS left the farm he had inherited from his father, Edward, and came from Newberry, S.C., to Alabama. 6 children: Martha Jane, Caroline, Lizzie, Della, George Jr., and Jean. Caroline Thomas, "the only one who never married" (p.3). Apparently lived with or near Archie Miles Thomas. Martha Thomas m. John Paty and had children: Wm. Riley, Adeline, Nancy, Benny, Sarah, "and possibly another child of whom we have no record." (p. 3)
