Research is being gathered about Waverly, Pa's fugitive-slave population and black Civil War soldiers.
Samuel Thomas, served in the famous regiment depicted in the film Glory.He served from 1863 to 1865 as a company cook.There are no records of his being in combat.He might have moved to Waverly, Pa. after the war to reunite with family, being buried next to Elizabeth Thomas.He died Aug 30, 1892, and is interred in Hickory Grove Cemetery.
