Thomas' of Madison Co., NC, bits and pieces
Hello All.First off I want to thank everyone in advance for any advice that they have to offer.I have a couple of things I would like to openly discuss.
1.1st off, I have listed Peter Thomas, as a son of Andrew and Nellie Dudley Thomas.I will get to that later in the post, so please bear with me.Peter Thomas born 1859, married Matilda Dockery on 06 May 1883 in Madison Co., North Carolina.I believe that Peter died sometime after 1895.Matilda was listed as living with her brother John Dockery in the 1900 Marshall, Madison Co., North Carolina Census records. She and her children however were listed as Dockery as well.I have not been able to locate Matilda after this census, therefore, she either died or remarried. For Peter and Matilda’s children I have:
Faney, b: 1882, Henry J., b: 1884, Charles A., b: 1885, Lilly Loretta, b: 1890,Annie, b: 1895,Zeb, b: 1895
Okay, the reasoning behind placing Peter with Andrew Thomas.
• In the 1860 Madison Co., North Carolina Census records take in August of 1860, list Peter as being 9/12 years of age (Dec 1859).
2. The so called Peter D. that I have seen is not Peter D. at all but Peter A(lexander) or Alec. This Peter was the son of John and Mary Ellen (Mollie) Franks, and born on 30 Jul 1860 in Madison Co., NC.
• That Peter was not listed in the 1880 Madison Co., North Carolina Census records with his parents, as he was already married and out of the home.He married Harriet A. Cody listed as being born in 1861, and listed as P. A. Thomas in the Pine Creek, Madison Co., North Carolina Census Records.
• The 1890 Census as we all know is gone
• John and Mary were listed in the 1900 Eagle, Pulaski Co., Kentucky Census Records, while Peter and Harriet were in Barren Fork, Pulaski Co., Kentucky.
• In the 1910, Barren Fork, now McCreary Co., Kentucky Census records. He has 2 children in that census:Charles and Eliza.
• Listed in the 1920 and 1930 McCreary Co., Kentucky Census records.
• Peter died on 04 Mar 1932, and is buried in the Barren Fork Cemetery, McCreary Co., Kentucky where his mother Mary Ellen Thomas is buried born: 17 Oct 1834, d: 12 Apr 1904.
3. Who was the Peter that married R. Brooks on 27 Apr 1861?If it was our Peter, son of Peter and Patsey, then I believe he was married at least 3 times then.First to R. Brooks, 2nd to: _____, and lastly to Eliza Landers on 30 Dec 1876.Why do I think he was married 3 times?
• Well, Peter was listed by himself (30 years of age) in the 1870 Madison Co., North Carolina Census Records. This tells us that the children we have him with that were born before 1876; Mollie, Edward, and George, and not from an R. L. Brooks.Who are they from?Another wife….Any clues?
4.I have two Henry J’s.One the son of Phillip and Vinah Landers known as Henry James born 13 Apr 1889,marriedIngabo Thomas. And a Henry J. Thomas born 1884, the son of Peter and Matilda Dockery Thomas who I believe married Isabelle B. “Lyda” Norton.I have seen where one Henry is married 1st to Isabell and 2nd to Ingabo.I do not believe this to be true. Why?
• Well, Henry and Isabell had Etta, Ruby Lula, Vina, and Ishmael. There was no sign of Henry in the 1920 census.Isabelle must have died, as well as Henry. In the 1920 Madison Co., North Carolina Census records we find Etta living with her Aunt Bertie (Norton) Bullman, Ruby Lula and Ishmael living with their grandparents Christoper Columbus Norton and Sarah Chandler, and Vina listed as adopted daughter of Lattie and Elizabeth (Chandler) Barnett.
5.Who did the Vina listed above marry? It was another Thomas. She was listed living with her brother in law Henry Thomas in the 1940 Madison Co., North Carolina Census records. He was married to Matilda Bullman. That Henry I cannot find either. He was born in 1892, and died in 1966.His children were:Rosevelt, Henry, and Paul Thomas.
6.Who was the Lizie Gosnell Thomas, b: 1875 to Simeon Gosnell and Lydia Stauton. She married second to Luther Chandler? She had a daughter Rachel Thomas. What was her husband _____ Thomas’ name?
This is it for now.Don’t want to overload.
Thank you.
