Cemetery, Stephentown, was age 3 years, 6 months.

CLARA THOMAS, b. September 1863; d. August 25, 1936, Handcock, Berkshire Co., NY, age 72-11-26 from myocarditis (Handcock Tn. Clk. records); m. THEODORE PRESTON, December 16, 1883, Sand Lake Baptist Church, Sand Lake, Rensselaer Co., NY; b. Bet. 1861 -1865, Brainard, Columbia Co., NY, a son of Joseph Preston & Elizabeth Sheldon. They were married by Rev. M. M. Mills12.

Notes for CLARA THOMAS:

In the 1880 New Ashford, Mass. census Clara Thomas, age 17, a seamstress, was boarding with her sister and brother-in-law, Armita (Thomas) & Byron Hoxie. In the 1880 Sand Lake census, Jeffrey was residing with a Sampson family, employed in a cotton mill.
The death record for Clara on file at the Handcock Town Clerk's office says she was buried in the Sand Lake Union Cemetery on August 26, 1926. There is a Clara Prestion buried in Lot 17, same date as above, but her age at death is given as "47." This must be a mistake on the part of the cemetery. There can hardly be two Clara Prestons who died on the same day in Handcock, Mass. and were buried in the same lot in the Sand Lake Union Cemetery. This lot was owned by Charles Shepherd, spouse of Clara's sister, Victoria, both of whom are also buried there. This age, "47," would make her born ca 1889, way too late. The age 7211 -26 makes her born ca 1863, which would be correct.

Notes for THEODORE PRESTON:

Theodore was born in Brainard, Columbia Co., NY, a small hamlet near Lebanon Valley. He resided in Sand Lake at the time of his marriage to Clara in 1883. In the 1930 North Adams census, a Theodore Preston, age 66, so born ca 1864, in New York, was an inmate in City Farmers Infirmary. It gives his age at marriage as 19, so married ca 1883. This fits for our Theodore. In 1930 Clara was residing with her sister and brother-in-law in Handcock, Victoria and Charles Shepard. Issue of Clara Thomas and Theodore Preston:

Handcock, Berkshire Co., MA, age 74-7-27; married CHARLES J. SHEPARD; was born About

February 1863;died October 1, 1940, Handcock, Berkshire Co., MA., age 77-7-9, a son of

Philander Shepard, Sr., & Mary Williams.

Notes for VICTORIA THOMAS:

Victoria's mother, Susan (Shepard) Thomas, and Charles' father, Philander Shepard, Sr. were sister and brother, so Victoria and Charles were first cousins.
Victoria was killed instantly when the car in which she was a passenger, driven by her husband, Charles, was involved in collisions with two other cars on the Handcock-South Williamston Road, not far from their home in Handcock. Death was due to internal injuries; Charles died the next day (this from "The North Adams Transcript dated September 30, 1940, and October 1, 1940). In this newspaper she is listed as the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Levi Thompson (slb Thomas) - incorrect! Levi Thomas was her brother. Another inaccuracy can be found in Victoria's death record at the Handcock Town Clerk's office. In this record Victoria is listed as a daughter of Mary (instead of Susan) Shepard and Jeffrey Thomas and it states this Mary was born in England. The only way this could be correct is if Susan died and Jeffrey married Mary as his second wife. The children of Victoria and Charles can be found under Charles Shepard, Mary E. Shepard. Victoria and Charles are buried in the Cemetery Sand Lake Union in Lot #39, owned by Charles. Also buried in this lot are Philander Shepard, Jr., and Victoria's nephew.

VICTORIA THOMAS (JEFFERY, SILAS) was born February 01, 1866 in Nassau NY, and died September 28, 1940 in Handcock MA USA. She married CHARLES J. G. SHEPHERD Abt. 1880, son of PHILANDER SHEPHERD and MARY WILLIAMS.

Notes for VICTORIA THOMAS:

Victoria is listed in the Handcock Town records as the daughter of Jeffery Thomas and Mary Shepherd. ( Mary being born in England). Victoria and Clara were sisters but these records give them different mothers and same fathers. Could Jeffery have been married to Susan Shephard first and then to Mary Shepherd? The fact that they were born in different places seam to make this possible. Handcock town records give Clara's parents as Susan Shepherd and Jeffery Thomas.

The obit- for Victoria has her parents listed as Levi Thompson this is incorrect. Levi was her brother. The newspaper has a error. Burned in Sand Lake Union cemetery lot 39 is Charles Shepherd, father 1862-1940 and his wife Victoria Shepard, mother, 1866-1940. "AGED MAN IS NEAR DEATH IN ACCIDENT FATAL TO WIFE Charles G.
