I am interested in the relationship between William B. Thom & Charles W. Thom, as well as in the Thom hat factory.
You indicated that Nathaniel G. Thom had a connection with the hat factory & possibly a relationship to William B. & Charles W. I would like to know what you know about these subjects. Here is some of what I know.
William B. Thom (1845/46-1929) was born in Putney, NH. He is listed in the 1865 Haverhill, MA Directory as being a "hatter" & boarding with Mrs. Julia Thom, a widow, at Ayer's Village. The 1880 census has him at age 36 residing at 186(?) Washington St., Haverhill, MA. His occupation is given as "hat manufacturer". The 1894 Haverhill MA Directory lists him as a "hat manufacturer" with "W.B. Thom & Co.", 270 River St. This company appears to have been a partnership in which William B. Thom, Charles W. Thom and two other individuals were partners. These same four individuals were also partners in "Thom & Bayley", which was established in New York City sometime before 1884. Thom & Bayley was a "dealer" in wool & fur hats. It also appears to have owned or controlled several hat manufacturing factories in New York and New Jersey. William B. Thom resided in New York City from about 1885. He was a very wealthy man and a part of New York society. Please tell me what you know.
