Charles A. THOM may have come to New York City from Scotland as early as 1835. A man by the name of Charles THOM, cabinet maker, is found in the NYC directory in that year. In the 1850 census, the man we know to be Charles THOM is indexed as Charles THORN, an easy mistake to be made by a transcriber, as the "m" looks like a "rn". Charles, 43, cabinet maker, born in Scotland. Mary (maiden name GOURLAY), 41, born in Scotland. G. E., 20, umbrella maker, born NY. (This is George E. Thom who died in Alameda co., CA in 1891) Charles, 17, brass finisher, born NY. David, 13, student, born NY. Mary, 7, student, born NY. Virginia, 5, student, born NY. Francis, 3, born NY. It is thought that Charles died in NYC in 1864 and that his widow Mary died in 1901. We're looking for proof and would appreciate any clues. Thank you.
