Reta, below I'm posting the information as I understand it. (I find this format much easier to follow than narrative text--easier to find vital information.) I will keep my eyes peeled for anything that might relate to Herman. Was one of his sons a firefighter? When I was a youngster, already interested in genealogy, I saw an article in a newspaper that mentioned a THIELE fireman from the Sioux City area (if I remember correctly), and I wrote to the family because we had the same last name. Small world.

circa 1903 enlisted in US Navy in San Francisco

served in Spanish American War

1st marriage: spouse & date unknown

2nd marriage: Amber Rhead (b. circa 1900) 10-2-1921 Sioux City,Woodbury,Ia; DIV 10-28-1943

3rd marriage: spouse & date unknown

Died 3-24-1946 Hastings, Adams Co., NE

Children with Amber Rhead: Alvin, Orville, and Donald

Herman disappeared from [city/county/state] circa [DATE]
Possibly in Chicago circa 1910 working as a butcher
