Deborah: Just a few tips to help you find more info about Eli Thibodeau: Eli would be from an Acadian French family, probably from New Brunswick (there are 100's of Thibodeau names in the phone listings under Canada 411). Thibodeau is also very common in the next-door province of Nova Scotia. In Moncton, New Brunswick, there is an excellent research centre for tracing Acadian French names at the University of Moncton, Acadian Studies Centre - Centre d'Etudes acadiennes, Universite de Moncton. Most of their on-line info is in English as well as French. I think you might have some luck finding Eli and his family if you focus on Matine McCarron. There are only 13 McCarron names in New Brunswick phone listings, and only 27 McCarron names in Maine phone listings. It is likely that McCarron is Irish and likely Catholic. I wonder if her name was actually MaRtine - with the "r"? If so, that might mean that her mother was French-speaking and Catholic and her father was of Irish descent and English-speaking. Most of the McCarron in New Brunswick are in a thin line between Moncton in the southeast through Saint John and up the Saint John River, going toward Maine. I think Eli and Ma(r)tine met one another either in Moncton or Saint John. He may have gone to the border area of Fort Fairfield, Maine to cut timber and maybe to float logs down the Saint John River to the Bay of Fundy. I wonder if Ma(r)tine had family on the Maine side of the border and if she moved there so she could be closer to Eli. That could be the reason why they married in Fort Fairfield. You are in luck if the marriage was a Catholic one, because the R.C. Church keeps very good records of births, marriages, and deaths. In the Catholic Church, the wedding usually took place in the parish church of the bride. If they married in Maine and not in New Brunswick, you should concentrate your research and try to find a Catholic marriage record from Aroostook County showing the bride's maiden name as McCarron. If you can find it, the name of Eli's father or mother might also be on it. If not, you might have some luck tracing Ma(r)tine McCarron's family, either in Maine or New Brunswick - or both. If anyone has done research or has written something about the McCarron families in New Brunswick or Maine, there may be some mention of this marriage in those records. To look at some of the sources of info that I have mentioned above, go to GOOGLE and enter words like: Roman Catholic parishes of Aroostook County, Maine Notify Administrator about this message?
