Some additional information on Thelen. If one looks they will find some Thelens in Belgium. They appear to have originated from around Adenau in the Palatinate (Pfalz) about 1700.For several generations Belgian Thelens went back to Adenau to take a wife.At the Thelen website below in the link is a posting with more detail:
Informationen sind von: http://www.familysearch.org/http://www.familysearch.org/ Mormon database. Servatius Thelen * ~1702 Herresbach, Liege, Belgium 00 Catherine Knechtgen 17 Jun 1717 Wanderath, Rheinland. Ihr Sohn: Johan Anton Thelen * 12 Nov 1727 Herresbach t 22 Nov 1781 oo Anna Maria Mueller 07 Dec 1751 Wanderath, Rheinland. kinder: Theodor Thelen * 05 Apr 1752 Herresbach Catherine Thelen * 03 Nov 1759 t 15 Mar 1764 Herresbach Anna * 07 Apr 1762 Martin Thelen 12 Jun 1767 - 26 Oct. 1819 Martin Thelen oo Maria Elisabeth Mueller 03 Jun 1794 Wanderath, Rheinland.
There is a possibility the Dutch Thelens come from a Thelen family North of Monchengladbach near the Dutch border from towns such as Breyell and Brüggen.Notably a bit South of the area and to the West of Monchengladbach there is a Thelen mentioned as being from Dyck near the Dutch border that purchased a part of a monastery around 1555 on the Internet. This is interesting in that Dyck is close to Elmpt which is the old seat of the Barons von Elmpt. The Bart. Thelen of 1592 in Stockheim was a "halfe" who had lease of about 150 Morgen Grosse from the Herren Wolff-Metternich-Elmpt.Generally, the halfe was well known to the Lord in order to be trusted with that much land.Either way the seat in Elmpt or Gracht bei Liblar (seat of Wolff-Metternichs) is some distance from Stockheim.Interestingly, there are some other Thelens near Hürth in the later 1600's by Gracht that married some of the same families (Rey, Vehlen e.g.).
In the Niederrhein there is mention of Thelens in a church book around 1587 in a now suburb of Aachen. There is a database on the 'net showing another Thelen in the Rheinland around 1490 so the name is older than the early 1600's.
The von Thelens in Upper Franconia (Oberfranken) per a book by Erich von Glass emerged out of the old von Theler name around 1400.These are NOT related to the later von Thelens from Westphalia (Westfalen) who went to Austria. The von Thelen family in the Rheinland around Mönchengladbach and Cologne (Köln) is still a mystery. This family also is not related to the Westphalian von Thelens. The Erich v. Glass book repeats an unsubstantiated story found in v. Prochazka's book of a Thelen going from Upper Franconia to the Netherlands around 1600;perhaps they stopped short in the North Rhine area.At a Thelen family website ( http://www.familienverband-thk.de/http://www.familienverband-thk.de/ ) there is mention of a knight around Cologne with a similar name in 1470 by an Ilka Sophia Thelen in Australia.Perhaps someone could contact her at [email protected] for more details if desired.
