I am looking for information about a Fred Thayer who is credited with inventing the catcher's mask. I am not related but I am interested as a baseball historian. All I know about him is that he was in the graduating class of 1878 at Harvard and I think his middle initial was W.

I would like to know his exact birth date and birth place. I hope a descendant of his visits this site and can help. Thanks.
