Thomas, m. ca. 1771 Phoebe (Loomis???) in Lebanon, CT
Thomas Thatcher (a/k/a Thacher) was born about September 20, 1741 in/near Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut to Thomas and Hannah (probably Tupper) Thatcher.Between about 1763 and 1765, Thomas administered the estate of his late father (Thomas "Sr.") in Lebanon.
The records of the First Congretational Church of Lebanon state that in 1771 Thomas Thatcher and wife Phoebe (a/k/a Phebe) were received as members.I have not been able to find a marriage record, but I would infer that they were married in 1770 or 1771.I am seeking the maiden name of Phoebe, and I have a theory that she might have been the Phoebe Loomis of Lebanon who was a daughter of Benoni and Hannah (Woodward) Loomis.
Phoebe Loomis was born about July 21, 1751 in Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut to Benoni and Hannah (Woodward) Loomis. The sources for this information include "The descendants of Joseph Loomis: who came from Braintree, England, in the ...", by Elias S. Loomis LL.D. 1875, Ph.D. 1908 (1909), at p. 59, which states: “No. 620Phoebe [Loomis], b. July 21, 1751, d. bef. 1783”.(I found this book on-line in google books.) This birth information can also be found as an extracted birth record in the Individual Genealogical Index of the Latter Day Saints website (www.familysearch.org).Some people have erroneousely submitted records of this birth as 1757 instead of 1751 and this error also appears in some family trees on World Connect (www.rootsweb.com).
In his book, Elias Loomis did not state any source for his information that Phoebe died "bef. 1783" and because her mother died in 1786 and her father in 1789, I do not believe that any probate records would have been the event that led to this date of 1783 as the latest possible year of life.Does anyone know what the basis for this 1783 date is or was?
I have not found any on-line postings that report a marriage for this Phoebe, but I am working on a THEORY that, in about 1770 or 1771, she MIGHT have married Thomas Thatcher (a/k/a Thacher) of Lebanon.
Thomas and Phoebe (Loomis???) Thatcher had three children who survived infancy, as can be inferred from the 1790 census for the family in Enfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. It is my belief that Phoebe had died in Enfield, between about 1778 and 1784 (there is reportedly some death of a Thatcher in Enfield circa October 1784 but I have not yet checked Barbour's Vital Records to confirm if this is so).I believe widower Thomas then remarried before 1790.
I know that Thomas and Phoebe had a son named Thomas (born about 1774, and who would marry Jane Lewis of Tolland County, CT and then, later, move to Bradford County, Pennsylvania). The census data also suggests that Thomas and Phoebe had a daughter born about 1772 and a son born about 1777-1782, but I have not yet found their names.
Does anyone have any information about the Phoebe who married Thomas Thatcher OR about Phoebe Loomis, b. 1751, that would either support or contradict my THEORY that she married Thomas Thatcher in Lebanon about 1770-1771?Please contact me directly at [email protected]
