I would check the Revolutionary "war rolls" for volunteers, etc., from New Jersey -- several Tharps appear there. Also, the Genealogical Society of New Jersey keeps their records in the Alexander Library at Rutgers Univ., at New Brunswick. If you are from out-of-state, contact the Society, and they will do research for you.(I could e-mail the address if you wish -- I just don't have it with me as I write this.)
If you contact me, I could reply with the list of Tharps I have been able to "unearth"
here in NJ (at the State Library & Princeton Public Library) -- if you don't already know it, most libraries have a genealogical or state history section, which can be very interesting and useful.

Good luck -- I have been hitting the wall on my ancester, John Jacob Tharp, b. 2/17/1776, in NJ --
