Hi Michael. I was under the impression that Thake & Thaker developed from the occupation Thatcher, ie that was their origional occupation when surnames first started to gain popularity in the 13th/14th c. This would mean that there was many sources of the name, as there would have been more than one person in that occupation.
It is possible that a thatcher who carried out work for Royalty was ennobled and therefore entitled to have a coat of arms. This priviledge would not extend to everybody of that name.
It is doubtful if any body could trace their line of ancesty back to those times but if they did the chances that they were the ones entitled to use the coat of arms must be on a par with winning the lottery.
I wish you luck in your quest.
